Babler Southwoods Hollow

Points of Interest:

  • See majestic old-growth white oaks, some of which are 200 years old.
  • Listen for wood thrushes and ovenbirds in the deep shade of this forest.

Natural Features Description:

This old-growth forest is dominated by white oaks and sugar maples. In the absence of fire, storm damage, or other disturbances this forest will eventually become dominated by the shade-tolerant sugar maple. The girth and height of the dominant overstory trees here is reflective of the productive loess-derived soils in this hollow. The hollow faces east that creates more moist and cool conditions than west facing ravines.
