Natural Features Description:
This dome-like glade occurs on the Cotter Formation dolomite on which the largest glade openings in the state are formed on. Umbrella plant that is found here is more common in the southern plains of Texas. This drought adapted species is at the northeast corner of its native range here. The glade flora here is exceptionally diverse with over 160 native species known. The surrounding woodlands contain scattered 200 year old post and chinkapin oaks.
This natural area is within the Mark Twain National Forest. Note, you may need a four-wheel drive vehicle to drive to this site. From Doniphan travel west on Highway 160 to Highway V. Turn left (south) onto Highway V and go for just over 3 miles and turn right (west) onto Forest Service Road 3213 (gravel). Wind your way west for about 1.5 miles on Forest Service Road 3213 to the three way intersection at the top of Wolf Mountain. Here go left (south) on Forest Service Road 3149 and travel for about 2 miles. At this point look right (west) for an old forest road. Park your vehicle and follow this road (3149A) for a third of a mile and on into the natural area. A map and compass are recommended to explore the area. Hunting is permitted.
