Discover some common Missouri trees and their fall colors in Tower Grove Park. Learn more about how our trees are used and their importance. We will be creating leaf print shirts using fabric paint and leaves to commemorate the natural beauty and style of Autumn. Please bring in your own t-shirt! Meet the naturalist at the West End Picnic Site.

For the safety of participants and our staff, MDC asks all guests observe social distancing guidelines and maintain at least 6 feet from others. Bringing and wearing face coverings is encouraged when indoors, or any time visitors are unable to maintain at least 6 feet from others. Local ordinances requiring face masks will be observed where applicable.

Basic Archery for Youth and Adults
If you have an interest in learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, but don’t know where to begin --- or maybe you’ve shot a bow once, but never pursued the activity any further --- this may be the class you’re looking for. Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This course is for youth and adults alike, ages 10 years old and older, with the desire to shoot a bow and arrow, but have little or no experience. Learn archery shooting fundamentals while gaining knowledge about equipment options and choices. Note: All equipment will be provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not recommended if you have shoulder or back injuries.
Dress for the weather and time of year. Entire course will be outdoors. Class will be cancelled in the event of rain.

• Bows and arrows will be disinfected before use. Hand sanitizer will be available and will be required at the beginning of class prior to handling equipment.

• Masks should be worn by instructors and participants if social distancing cannot be maintained. Masks are not required during proper social distancing. Please ensure 6 feet of social distance always.

Join us for this informative Virtual program to learn the basics of hunting whitetail deer. We will cover scouting, setup, taking the shot and much more.

The Midweek Trekkers are traveling to Three Creeks CA in Boone County this month. Bring lunch, water, bug repellent and dress for the weather. Trail: Easy, 3-4 miles.

Join MDC naturalists and area birders as we discover the avian life that call Runge home. These short birding walks are for all experience-levels. We will gather near the front doors of the nature center. Binoculars and field guides will be provided for those that need them. Wearing a mask is required to attend this program.

Fall is here, and the trees are bursting with color. Join us for a kayak paddle on nearby Ashland Lake. We will learn the basics and paddle into the lake to enjoy the fall colors. Please meet at the parking lot access and dress for cooler weather.
* Directions from Jeff City: Head north on Hwy 63 toward Columbia, take Ashland exit and turn right on to Hwy Y. Travel about 3 miles until you cross Brushy Creek Bridge. The sign and turn for Ashland Lake Access will be immediately on the right. *Registration required (ages 12+)

Location: Maintz Wildlife Preserve Archery Range

Looking for something to do on a Friday Night? Bring your special someone to Maintz Archery Range for some fun and excitement shooting archery. This event is for any two-person team that would like to shoot together on the field archery course. Bows and arrows will be provided, or you may bring your own. No crossbows please. There must be a minimum of 6 archers registered by 10/20 to hold the course. Participants will be contacted by phone for cancelation or postponement due to bad weather.
This in person program requires participants to practice social distancing, masks are encouraged during instructional period. (ages 18+)

Location: August A Busch Shooting Range

This program and hunt is for youth, new to duck hunting, that is interested in learning the skills needed to successfully hunt ducks. We will begin with a mandatory online class on Tuesday, October 13 from 6-7 p.m. to discuss safety, firearms, clothing, hunting techniques, and details of the hunt. All participants for the hunt must attend the mandatory online clinic and be Hunter Education Certified to participate in the hunt on October 24.

This Women's Only Beginner Handgun program will include safety, operation, and techniques of shooting semi-auto and revolver handguns. Participants must be at least 16 years old. All equipment will be provided, including guns, ammo, targets, eye and ear protection. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear (no open toed shoes). You are welcome to bring your personal handgun as long as it is unloaded and cased. If you choose to bring your personal handgun, you will need to provide your own ammunition if it is a caliber other than .22 long rifle or 9mm. After a short lecture session, participants will practice shooting at paper targets.

The Saturday Hikers will be hiking Gans Creek Wild Area in Rock Bridge State Park. We will meet at Wagon Wheel Trailhead at 8:30am. The trailhead is accessed from Highway 63 by exiting at Discovery Parkway and heading southwest. Discovery Pkwy will merge with E. Gans Rd. Continue west on E. Gans Rd. to S. Bearfield Rd and turn left and go all the way to the end of the road.

**Bring lunch, water, bug repellant and rain gear if rain threatens. Hike moderate approx. 4-5 miles

Location: Tywappity Community Lake

Come borrow a canoe! This is an opportunity for you and your family to join us for a peaceful paddle on the lake. This is an unguided experience, but canoe safety instruction will be provided as well as MDC staff to monitor safety on the water. Please meet at the boat ramp on Tywappity Lake just outside Chaffee. Sessions will last 1.5 hours. Boats are required to have 1 participant over the age of 16, and a maximum of 3 persons per boat. If your family wishes to borrow 2 boats, please register 2 participants to insure your spot. Masks are required for instruction period but are not required during time on the water. Only register one person per boat borrowed. Life jackets, paddles, and canoes will be provided. (all ages)

Registration ends 2 hours before program begins.

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2020 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

Location: Cape Girardeau Nature Center

Students will learn to make a simple square basket using basic tools and processes. Techniques learned will be putting ribs in a slotted pine base, simple twining, basic over and under weaving, decorative chain weaving, rimming and lashing. Students will also learn shaping and spacing as they weave to achieve an attractive finished basket. (ages 12+)
All materials are provided.

Masks are required, and participants will social distance. Each participant will have their own materials and tools to reduce contact.

Registration ends 2 hours before program begins.

Learn about the native plants that work well in the landscape. Participants will then create a door swag from their bounty.

Registration required (all ages) Peek behind the scenes of the Discovery Center animal exhibits. Join us as we care for our turtles, amphibians and fish and see what these animals eat. A naturalist will be available to answer any of your questions.
