Elsberry, Mo. — (This event has been cancelled on 10/2/15 due to lack of preregistrations.) The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding a Wetland Field Day Saturday, Oct. 3, at B.K. Leach Conservation Area in Lincoln County. This free event will give the public a chance to learn why these habitats are so important, how MDC manages them, and most importantly, the opportunity to explore a wetland first hand.
Wetland Field Day will offer informative presentations from MDC experts on wetland-related topics from 9 a.m. to noon. Preregistration is required to attend the presentations and opens at 8 a.m.
Visitors will discover the importance of waterfowl refuges, the benefits of the Wetland Reserve Program, waterfowl banding, rocket netting and waterfowl hunting strategies. There will also be a wetland management hayride through the area, along with a waterfowl hunting demonstration.
B. K. Leach Conservation Area is located in northeastern Lincoln County. From Elsberry, take Highway 79 south three miles, then Route M east three miles to the main tract. For more information on Wetland Field Day, call 573-898-5905.
Registrations will also be taken by phone. Space for the presentations will be limited.
The 4,307-acre area contains a wide variety of wetland habitats, ranging from marshes to backwater sloughs. The wetlands are managed to provide food for migrating waterfowl, while also providing habitat for resident marsh birds, and other wetland dependent wildlife.
