Cape Girardeau Nature Center to hold Women’s Fishing Clinic

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will hold a Discover Nature Women's Fishing Clinic on June 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. This is a free opportunity for women to learn the essentials of fishing, as well as the types of equipment needed and how to filet the big catch of the day.

Fishing is a sport that was traditionally dominated by men, but MDC wants to provide women with confidence and skills needed to accomplish everything fishing requires, from knot tying and baiting hooks to removing hooks and filleting their fish.

“This program is designed for women who have never gone fishing or maybe have, but do not feel comfortable doing it alone,” said MDC Naturalist Angela Pierce. 

She added that by teaching a person to fish, they are not only learning a skill, but also enjoying the natural world that is all around them.

Discover Nature Women programs are designed to help women discover nature through activities they may not have previous experience with. MDC also holds Discover Nature Family and Discover Nature Schools programs, which cater to the needs of specific audiences.

A valid fishing permit is required for anglers ages 15 to 65. This event is great for ages 18 and up, or 14 and up when accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and begins May 15.
