MOUNT VERNON, Mo. – Fishing for catfish has long been an activity that has provided angling excitement and excellent table fare.
People interested in learning more about catching, cleaning, and preparing these popular sportfish should plan to attend the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) program “Catfish – Catch, Clean & Cook” program Oct. 14. This free event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at MDC’s Chesapeake Hatchery near Mount Vernon. The hatchery is located in Lawrence County at 21186 Highway 174. This program is for ages 8 and up. At this program, MDC Community Education Assistant Stacy Wheatley will discuss the steps needed to get a catfish from the pond onto the dinner plate. Topics that will be covered include catfish habits, fishing strategies, regulations, cleaning techniques, and how to prepare filets for the table. Participants will have a chance to sample some fried catfish that will be prepared for the program.
Participants will have a chance to fish for catfish at one of Chesapeake Hatchery’s ponds. People can either bring their own fishing equipment and bait or use equipment provided by MDC staff. People ages 16-64 who are planning to fish must possess a valid Missouri fishing license.
