Celebrate Earth Day with MDC at State Capitol, Runge Nature Center

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Celebrate Earth Day this year with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) at the State Capitol and Runge Conservation Nature Center. Earth Day events will begin Friday, April 21, on the south lawn of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. A variety of fun and educational activities will take place from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., offering students and others opportunities to learn more about the natural world around them.

This year’s theme will focus on the upcoming solar eclipse and reptiles that rely on the sun for body warmth. The World Bird Sanctuary will also present two special shows at 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Teachers who want to bring their classes can register for this event through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources at dnr.mo.gov/earthday/register.htm. The events are tailored to fifth grade students, but all ages are welcome.

On Saturday, April 22, continue the Earth Day celebration with MDC staff at Runge Conservation Nature Center for a Wonderful Wildflowers event. From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., enjoy special presentations, activities and crafts on Missouri’s native wildflowers, followed by a wildflower walk on the property. The event is free, and no registration is necessary.

“This time of the year is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty Missouri has to offer,” said MDC Naturalist Becky Matney. “Come visit the nature center and learn all about Missouri’s native wildflowers.”
