JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites you to celebrate the Show-Me-State's rich hunting heritage and fishing traditions through its National Hunting and Fishing Day events being held around the state in late September.
National Hunting and Fishing Day was created by Congress in 1972 to commemorate past, present, and future conservation successes and to honor those sportsmen and sportswomen who began the modern conservation movement. National Hunting and Fishing Day is designated as the fourth Saturday in September. For more information, go online to nhfday.org/.
Conservation makes Missouri a great place to hunt and fish for more than half-a-million hunters and 1.1 million anglers. Celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day at the following MDC events on Sept. 20 and 27.
In the Columbia area, join MDC and the University of Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Memorial Stadium at Faurot Field before the MU Tigers take on the Indiana Hoosiers. Visit the MDC booth across from the east stadium entrance on Mick Deaver Memorial Drive beginning three hours before kick-off. Offerings will include outdoor-related information, real animal furs to touch, a large aquarium with Missouri fish, live reptiles, exhibits about Missouri's wildlife, and more. In the Kirksville area, join MDC on Saturday, Sept 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northeast Missouri Fairgrounds at 2700 E. Illinois St. in Kirksville for a variety of free, family fun. Activities will include an archery tournament along with presentations on deer management, turkey calling and research, fishing-pole casting, BB-gun shooting, raffles, how to introduce kids to hunting, and more. Bring the family for free outdoor fun at MDC's James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, 13101 Ranson Road in Lees Summit, on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is in cooperation with Ducks Unlimited's Green Wings program and will offer a variety of free activities including trap shooting, archery, and fishing. Attendees can also test their wildlife identification knowledge through a variety of exhibits, and kids will receive a free Green Wing membership. In the Ozarks area, discover nature at MDC's Twin Pines Conservation Education Center in Winona off of HWY 60 during Great Outdoors Day on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy archery, fishing, info on backpacking, Dutch-oven cooking, and more. In the Cape Girardeau area, spend "A Day on the River" with MDC from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverfront Park in downtown Cape Girardeau. Activities will include boat rides, information on the Mighty Mississippi and surrounding wetlands, live animal displays, crafts, and more. In the St. Louis area, join MDC for A Day at the Confluence on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake. Enjoy a day of free fun and educational activities including guided river-boat rides, hiking, archery and air rifle shooting, fishing and fish identification information, animal skull mazes, Asian carp fileting demonstrations and tastings, fried catfish sampling, a laser shot shooting simulator, and special activities for young children. Partners include Ducks Unlimited, Boy Scouts of America, St. Louis Audubon Society, National Great Rivers Resource and Education Center, Missouri Water Patrol, US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Spanish Lake Fire Protection District. In the Springfield area, learn about and participate in a variety of outdoor activities at Great Outdoors Day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MDC's Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center at the Bois D'Arc Conservation Area northwest of Springfield at 4897 N.
