CHARLESTON MO - A day of first catches and other outdoor discovery is in store for Charleston third and fifth graders as they get ready to discover nature at the 27th annual Solar Day to be held May 6 near Charleston.
Last year, fifth graders Danitra Jones, Dontarius Sharp and A’JoiYah Wells made their first catches -- large mouth bass -- at the event held at the Wayne Corse family farm. Corse's father-in-law, Robert G. Delaney, was a Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Commissioner from 1965 to 1974 and the family has a long history of promoting conservation practices.
Solar Day is just one way the Corse family partners with MDC employees and other volunteers to help local students discover nature. Solar Day highlights included tree identification exercises, Wayne Corse's amphibian and reptile program, fishing in the family's pond, duck-wing identification and outdoor cooking.
