SPANISH LAKE, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites people of all abilities to come and take a spin at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake.
The “Take Your Time: Bike, Wheelchair, and Scooter Ride” takes place Saturday, June 2 from 5-7:30 p.m. This free program is tailored to persons with developmental disabilities and their families or support givers, but anyone of any ability can attend. If it’s got wheels, and you power it, you can take it for a spin at Columbia Bottom. Three-wheeled bikes, bikes pulling carts or wagons, wheelchairs, and scooters are all welcome and everyone is free to go at their own pace.
Participants will wheel along a six-mile round trip route between the boat ramp and Confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The surface is flat and mostly paved. There will also be snacks and water stops along the way to help keep everyone properly hydrated. A mini obstacle course will even be available for those who want to challenge their skills. Participants can also have their bike checked out during the bike safety checks offered at 5 and 6 p.m. There will also be the chance to see a demonstration of Track Chairs in action.
All riders must have a working bike, helmet and support accompaniment on the ride. Advanced registration is required through the St. Louis Rec Council by calling 314-726-6044. Participants should plan on meeting at the Missouri River boat ramp for check in.
Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located at 801 Strodtman Road in north St. Louis County. The area can be reached by taking the Riverview Drive Exit from I-270 and travelling north approximately 3 miles.
