SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Deer hunting and Halloween are popular events in Missouri in autumn and both topics serve as the basis for conservation-themed programs in October at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Springfield Conservation Nature Center. On Oct. 17, learn more about the basics of hunting deer at Deer Hunting Basics. MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Greg Collier will discuss the basic strategies of deer hunting (both archery and firearm) at this free event, which is from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Topics include equipment, regulations, scouting, hunting methods, tree stand placement and safety. On Oct. 24 and Oct. 25, some popular super heroes make a surprise visit to the nature center to help local habitats in the Halloween Happening event. No registration is required for this event, which is from 6:30-9:30 p.m. each evening. Guided evening hikes will be led on the trail on a first-come, first-served basis with the last hike leaving at 9 p.m. People can enjoy activities inside the nature center building before or after their hikes, which are insured to be insightful, not frightful.
