Kansas City, Mo. – Whether it’s a few acres or a big farm, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) provides expertise and connections to financial assistance for property owners seeking to improve wildlife habitat on their land. MDC will offer a free workshop about private land conservation services from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Platte County Community Center, 8875 Clark Ave., in Parkville.
MDC can help landowners connect with grants or cost sharing programs that improve wildlife habitat. For example, native wildflowers planted in pollinator plots can benefit gamebirds, songbirds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Timber stand improvement can help woodlands attract more deer and wild turkeys. Field edges can be managed to improve soil and water conservation as well as boosting wildlife. Aquatic vegetation in ponds can be controlled to improve fishing.
Cassandra Messer, MDC private land conservationist, will talk at the workshop about the programs and services that MDC provides for private landowners. Representatives will also be present from University of Missouri Extension and the Natural Resources Conservation Service to discuss their programs. Some conservation practices can also benefit livestock forage for ranchers.
