HIGH RIDGE, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center will host an open-house style event for 5-stand and trap shooting on Tuesday, Aug. 21 from 5-7 p.m. This event is free and open to all ages and will be an excellent place to start for those who would like to get into shotgun sports, but aren’t quite sure where to start.

Shooters do not need to have their own equipment as firearms, ammunition, and hearing and eye protection will all be provided by MDC. Shooters who would like to bring their own firearms and ammunition are welcome to do so.

5-stand is a discipline of clay bird shooting that simulates realistic scenarios for the hunter getting ready to go afield. Targets will imitate the flight patterns of some of Missouri’s most popular game birds. Shooters rotate through five stations where they will see clay targets flying left and right, toward and away from them at different angles and speeds. This discipline will be an excellent preparation for beginning shooters looking to get into game bird hunting.

The event will also feature trap shooting, where shooters line up at five positions to shoot at clay targets traveling away from them at a constant speed and height, but with varying angles. Trap shooting is a great way for beginning shooters to learn the fundamentals of shooting a moving target with a shotgun.

As the event will be held open-house style, no advanced registration is necessary.  Participants can arrive anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. Jay Henges staff will be present to assist shooters in learning the basics of shotgun shooting. This will be an ideal opportunity for individuals interested in clay bird shooting, but are still looking for that first chance to get started. The event will also be broadcast in real time via Facebook Live for those who can’t attend in person.
