JOPLIN, Mo. – Earth Day is a great time to learn about the wildflowers that are blooming around us.

People can get information about spring wildflowers that are blooming and learn how these flowers are components of habitats for a number of insect and wildlife species at the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) program “Conservation Families: Colors of Spring.” This program will be on Earth Day, April 22, from 6-7 p.m. at MDC’s Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center, which is located at 201 W. Riviera Drive in Joplin. People can register at:

At the April 22 program, MDC Naturalist Jessie Ballard will talk about basic flower anatomy, the types of flowers that are starting to bloom in this area, and will also discuss how insects and other animals utilize these plants. Participants of this program will have a chance to create some easy floral artwork to take home. This program is designed for all ages.

Though this program is free, registration is required to participate using the link above.

People can stay informed about upcoming programs at MDC’s Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center and other MDC facilities by signing up for text alerts and e-mail bulletins. People who have questions about how to sign up for text alerts from the Shoal Creek Center can call 417-629-3434.

Staff at MDC facilities across the state are holding virtual programs. A listing of these programs can be found at mdc.mo.gov/events.
