Kansas City, Mo. – Fishing makes a fine outdoor activity for families and individuals because the sport is doable for a wide range of ages and abilities. Two free upcoming classes at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs will help people get started.

The basics of catching fish with artificial lures will be taught from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, July 25, at the center’s W. Robert Aylward Educational Pond. Participants will learn about lures such as spinners, spoons, jigs and crankbaits that float or dive. The class will include catch-and-release fishing in the pond. This session is for participants ages 12-18, and registration is required.

MDC’s Burr Oak Woods staff will offer a family fishing class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 10. This session will also be held at the center’s Aylward Educational Pond. Instructors will teach basic fishing skills. Fishing tackle and worms for bait will be provided, and participants will fish in the pond. Youths who attend will be entered for a drawing at summer’s end for a tackle box and fishing rod and reel. This session is designed for family participation. Registration is required for each family member attending.

MDC will provide all necessary equipment for both classes. To register for the artificial lures class, visit To register for the family fishing class,
