JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to help Missourians get outside and enjoy spring hikes and other outdoor adventures. Runge Conservation Nature Center will offer two free workshops on how to use a topographic map, and navigate with a compass, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on May 10 and 11.
Learning how to read topographic maps and a compass can add an element of independence to adventures in Missouri’s outdoors, and can lead to more enriching experiences in nature. At these free workshops, MDC staff will teach basic map reading and compass navigation skills, and answer questions. Participants can bring their own compass, or use one provided by MDC, and should be prepared to go outside where they will have the opportunity to practice what they learn in the classroom.
These free workshops are open to ages 6-years and older (children must be accompanied by an adult), and registration opens on May 1. To register, call the nature center at (573) 526-5544.
Runge Conservation Nature Center is located at 330 Commerce Drive in Jefferson City. The nature center is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Thursday from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., except for state holidays. Trails on the surrounding conservation area are open from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily, with outdoor restrooms open all year.
