Kansas City, Mo. – Shelby Winslow of Lee’s Summit recently scored 290 out of a possible 300 to win third place in an international archery tournament June 29 and 30. Winslow represented Summit Lakes Middle School at the 2013 NASP World Championship in St. Louis. The tourney is part of the National Archery in Schools Program.
“That was really exciting to have someone from our area there and have them among the top,” said Chris Capps, an outdoor skills specialist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).
In March, Winslow shot a 287, the top score at the Missouri NASP tourney held in Warrensburg. The World NASP competition drew almost 3,000 archers from 22 states and two Canadian provinces.
“It was a very well done event and I think everyone enjoyed it,” Capps said.
Under the NASP program, all archers shoot with the same simple compound bow. Pure archery skills such as good aim are what counts. Procedures on the target range firing lines are standardized for practice and tourneys, safety first. Male and female archers of all ages can shoot the same equipment at the same time. In tourneys, the competition is divided by gender and into elementary, middle school and high school age ranges. NASP offers a quiet, skills-based sport that allows all participants to build confidence and success.
MDC coordinates a Missouri National Archery in Schools Program (MoNASP) in partnership with schools, volunteers and the Conservation Federation of Missouri. MDC education consultants are available to assist schools in starting an archery program. Information on the program is available online at mdc.mo.gov/node/3409.
