Sedalia, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and partners will offer a free workshop on managing native warm season grass pastures from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, in Sedalia. A catered lunch will be provided. Registration is requested prior to Jan. 17.
The featured speaker will be Pat Keyser, professor and director of the University of Tennessee Center for Native Grassland Management at Knoxville. Keyser will present two talks. One will focus on tips for establishing native warm season grass plantings. A second talk will focus on long-term management for grazing and hay production. Native warm season grasses refer to prairie grasses that have strong growth through the hottest months of summer, providing forage or hay when cool-season grasses have slowed their growth.
Todd Lorenz of the University of Missouri Extension Service will discuss nitrogen fertility on novel endophyte tall fescue. Ryan Peck, district conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will talk about federal and state cost share programs that can help landowners establish native grass plantings. Dave Niebruegge, MDC private land conservationist, will discuss options for managing native grasses for wildlife habitat.
This workshop is sponsored by MDC, University of Missouri Extension, and the Grasslands Project of the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
