MDC can help landowners with invasive species at workshop on June 4 at Powell Gardens

Kansas City, Mo. – Invasive species are a nuisance that harm nature, outdoor recreation, and agriculture. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer an invasive species workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 4, at Powell Gardens in Johnson County, southeast of Kansas City and west of Warrensburg. MDC’s workshop is free. But Powell Gardens does require a $10 admission fee. Participants are encouraged to tour the extensive gardens and exhibits before or after the workshop.

This workshop will focus on identification, controls, and real-world scenarios involving invasives in our native ecosystems. The discussions will be led by Austin Worth, MDC private lands conservationist, and Trish Yasger, MDC fisheries management biologist. Attendees are also welcomed to bring in terrestrial or aquatic plants for them to identify.

MDC can help property owners and managers with invasive species issues or habitat improvement. From grasslands to woodlands or fishing ponds and lakes, invasives can pose major problems. But identifying problem plants early and using proper controls can save money and effort. MDC offers expertise and in some cases cost-sharing grants are available.
