MDC helps grow new generation of turkey hunters, conservationists

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) helped a new generation of turkey hunters discover the joys of the hunt last weekend.  Two mentored hunts in central Missouri ensured plenty of opportunities for interested youth to learn from some of the state’s leading turkey experts. 

In Jefferson City, 16 kids from across the state joined turkey experts from MDC, the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), and the Conservation Federation of Missouri (CFM) for an educational afternoon clinic.  As part of the eighth annual Governor’s Youth Turkey Clinic, kids and their families enjoyed dinner at the Governor’s Mansion and went to bed early to prepare for the next morning’s mentored hunt.  12 of those young hunters harvested turkeys. 

“There is nothing more fulfilling than passing on the love of a personal passion to a youth who will carry that flame forward,” said CFM Executive Director Brandon Butler. “The Governor's Youth Turkey Hunt is such an incredible experience for the youth participants, that I expect many of them will be hunters for life.”

In Boone and Callaway counties, kids also attended a free MDC clinic, followed by a chance to harvest birds under the guidance of accomplished hunters. 

“All hunters were able to see and hear turkeys, and two lucky hunters connected and took home birds,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Brian Flowers.  “With the help of volunteer mentors, we were able to provide world-class opportunities to first-time turkey hunters.”
