The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold a prescribed burn workshop, followed by a demonstration burn, on Saturday, April 11 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. for interested landowners at the Lincoln County Health Department, #5 Health Department Drive in Troy.

This workshop is part of MDC’s commitment to work with landowners interested in learning how to properly and safely utilize prescribed fire to manage grasslands, prairies, woodlands, glades and other natural communities on their land.

The course will be taught by MDC-certified burners, and participants will learn the value and purpose of prescribed fire as a land management tool.  Attendees will receive instruction on how to safely and effectively plan and conduct a controlled burn.  The workshop will also discuss situations where prescribed burning could create benefits for both property owners and their land, and wildlife habitat.

The classroom portion will be held during the morning.  Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an actual demonstration burn in the afternoon if weather conditions permit a safe burn.

Participants should dress for the weather and have protective eyewear, leather gloves, leather boots, a handkerchief or bandana, eye protection and clothing made of natural fibers like cotton.  Clothing made from synthetic materials should be avoided if at all possible due to its high flammability.

The workshop is free but seating is limited. For reservations, call 636-528-4877, ext. 3. For more on prescribed burns, go online to http://mdc.mo.gov/node/3699.
