MDC holds Discover Nature—Girls Camp Junior May 20-21 at Powder Valley Nature Center

KIRKWOOD, Mo.—The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) believes kids are never too young to discover nature.  Based on the success and popularity of its original Discover Nature—Girls Camp held during the summer, MDC is now offering Discover Nature—Girls Camp Junior Saturday and Sunday, May 20-21.  This program is customized for younger girls, age 8-11, and will be held at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirkwood. 

Discover Nature—Girls Junior Camp is a free 2-day, 1-night camp aimed at introducing girls, ages 8-11, to a variety of outdoor pursuits mentored by MDC experts. The camp is an excellent chance for girls from urban environments or new to the outdoors to experience a supportive, learning atmosphere while they participate in “hands-on” outdoor skills. One of the goals of camp is to encourage the participants to leave with the confidence to explore Missouri’s diverse outdoors on their own.

Some of the outdoor activities girls will explore include compass skills, wildlife identification, investigating pond life, camp cooking and careers in wildlife and conservation.

The girls should arrive on Saturday between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. to check in and be picked up on Sunday by 2 p.m.

Advanced registration for Discover Nature—Girls Camp Junior is required.  To obtain a registration form, call Conservation Agent Lexis Riter at 314-696-9425.  Completed registration is due by April 14.  The camp will accept up to 30 participants.  After 30 girls are registered, a waiting list will be maintained if cancellations occur. Participants will be contacted by email or phone after April 24, and receive a packet with a schedule and further information about attending the camp in the mail.   

Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is located at 11715 Cragwold Road, near the intersection of I-44 and I-270.
