Windsor, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free Outdoor Skills Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at Farrington Park Lake in Windsor. Head outdoors and try out some skills that can become hobbies. MDC staff and volunteers will help participants learn about archery, camping, and fishing. Events will be based at the park’s Shelter House E.

“Learning outdoor skills is a great way increase one’s appreciation of the outdoors,” said Ginger Miller, MDC conservation educator. “This event will provide opportunities to learn through hands-on experience and get tips for success from passionate outdoors persons.”

Missouri has many camping opportunities, from tent camping near a vehicle to backpacking. People can get started with some basic tips.

“Maybe you’ve always wanted to go camping, but you were not quite sure how to get started,” Miller said. “At our event, you can see a campsite set up and talk with avid campers about what they pack and how they select a site.”

The ancient art of archery has seen a revival in recent decades, with archers embracing both ancient bows and high-tech modern bows and arrows. Visitors at the event can try out target archery.

“Archery is a fun lifetime sport,” Miller said. “Participants will learn proper stance and technique, and they can try out shooting a bow.”

MDC will also have gear, bait, and coaches on hand to help visitors go fishing in Farrington Park Lake. Participants ages 16 to 65 will need to have a valid fishing permit.

“Perhaps you’ve been wanting to fish but weren’t sure what equipment to purchase or how to clean and prepare your fish for the table,” Miller said. “We will help you get started fishing and demonstrate how to clean and cook your catch. There will be samples available for you to taste fresh cooked fish.”

This event is open to adults and families. Youths must be ages 9 and older to participate in the outdoor skills. COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed. The program is limited to 30 participants. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4Um.
