El Dorado Springs, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the St. Clair County Soil and Water Conservation District will host a free prescribed burn workshop 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Circle S Feed Company, 106 W. Hainline St., El Dorado Springs.

Prescribed burns utilize fire to improve grazing forage, to help control unwanted plants or trees in pastures or woodlands, and to improve habitat for wildlife. Topics covered in the workshop will include how to plan a burn, equipment and personnel, timing a burn, smoke management, benefits to grasslands, weather effects and doing follow-up evaluations.

Lunch will be provided. If weather conditions permit, a demonstration burn will be conducted in the afternoon. Those who wish to participate in the demonstration burn should dress appropriately and have leather boots and gloves.

Participants are asked to register by Jan. 15 by calling the Soil and Water Conservation District at 417-646-8108, ext. 3. Participants may also call MDC's El Dorado Springs office at 417-876-5226.

MDC offers numerous services to private landowners interested in preserving water quality, improving timber stands or boosting wildlife habitat. For more information, visit mdc.mo.gov/your-property.
