Chillicothe, Mo. – On a beautiful fall afternoon, visitors came in transport old and new for the 32nd annual fall driving tour at the Poosey Conservation Area in Livingston County. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) staff set up education stations along the tour route where visitors could stop and ask questions. More than 1,300 visitors drove pickups, guided wagons, rode horseback, sat on straw bales on trailers, or steered ATVs along the hilly gravel roads.
The winding up-and-down route traced through a rugged portion of the Poosey Area, named for a historic community once nestled in the hills. Visitors saw native grass restorations on hilltop meadows, thinned timber stands to improve forest health, and Pike’s Lake. Many of the hickory trees were turning golden.
MDC’s Poosey Conservation Area has a wide variety of wildlife habitats, fishing lakes, ponds, and trails. But in autumn, the forested hills are especially gorgeous and the fall driving tour is a popular community event.
