Kansas City, Mo. – Visitors attending Family Outdoor Day on Sept. 22 at the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit enjoyed fishing, wildlife displays, archery, and other outdoor skills. Plus, the weather was cool and sunny, a sign autumn had arrived. The annual event is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Ducks Unlimited (DU), Nathan’s Catch Foundation, Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, and volunteers who help teach outdoor skills. All activities were free.
Bluegill were biting at the fishing event at Nell Lake. MDC staff and volunteers helped newcomers to angling bait hooks and learn how to cast bobber and bait with a rod and reel. The Nathan’s Catch Foundation also gave away fishing rods and tackle to youngsters.
DU volunteers gave practice casting lessons. They also provided free DU Greenwing memberships and duck calls to youths. Kids were also able to play in a beaver lodge replica, try target shooting with pellet guns, and throw the atlatl dart.
