COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites teachers to an upcoming Discover Nature Schools – Nature Unhooked teacher training workshop. This free workshop will provide training for teachers interested in improving conservation education in their Missouri classroom, home-school class, or youth group. The upcoming training will take place 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the MDC Central Regional Office, 3500 East Gans Road, in Columbia, on Dec. 6.

“The Discover Nature Schools – Nature Unhooked curriculum is a great way to get students outdoors and bring the outdoors inside the classroom,” said MDC Conservation Education Consultant Emily Porter.

This workshop will prepare educators to teach the hands-on, course level expectations-based unit for 6th - 8th grades. Teacher’s guides and classroom sets of student guides and science notebooks are provided for free, and eligible schools can receive non-competitive grants for field experiences and classroom materials that support the curriculum unit. Space is limited and participants must make reservations before Dec. 3 to ensure enough supplies for the training session.

“Nature Unhooked is a new and exciting way to utilize scientific inquiry, investigation and project-based learning through aquatic education,” Porter said.

MDC’s Discover Nature Schools program provides no-cost curriculum units to teachers and schools in the state of Missouri. Curriculum units are available for preschool through 12th grade and are aligned with Missouri state standards in order to help teachers and students meet required learning expectations. Approximately 99% of school districts and 40% of schools in the state participate in the Discover Nature Schools program.

To attend the training educators need to create a teacher portal account at mdc.mo.gov/teachers, then register at nature.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/teacher-portal/workshops/discover-nature-schools-nature-unhooked-6
