ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host a free Back to School Fishing event at Bray Conservation Area (CA), Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. School-aged children and their families are welcome to enjoy an evening of catch-and-release fishing. MDC Conservation Educator, Dwight Warnke, said school-aged children who attend will receive school supplies, courtesy of MDC and Missouri Master Naturalists.

“MDC is very education-minded,” said Warnke. “We work with schools all across the state to help them use concepts of nature in the classroom through the Discover Nature Schools program (DNS). Just like this event. Education and nature go hand in hand.”

Warnke said one of the best ways for students to learn about nature is to interact with the outdoors. That’s why MDC worked with teachers and education consultants to create DNS, the statewide conservation science education program. DNS emphasizes hands-on learning, teaches problem-solving, and provides authentic and local contexts for learning. DNS teaches students from pre-K through high school about Missouri’s native plants, animals, and habitats and connects them with nature.

Those who attend the Back to School Fishing event will also learn about native plants, fish identification and connect with nature.

Warnke said registration is required in advance for this event at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zgk. Bray CA is in Rolla. From Rolla I-44 exit 184, take Kingshighway east, then Bridge School Road (CR 7000) south 3 miles.  The area is on the left.
