Kansas City, Mo. – Grab your powder horn or camera, the Lake City Rendezvous will offer black powder shooting, frontier lore and a chance for interesting photos 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. The public is invited to enjoy the free event celebrating early 1800s backwoods skills at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Lake City Shooting Range, 28505 E. Truman Road, Buckner, Mo.
"The rendezvous is a glimpse at what the 1800's may have been like and some of the challenges that mountain men faced," said Kellie Zurowski, MDC range officer.
Black powder enthusiasts will be able to shoot for free in the shooting competition on the range's rifle, pistol, trap and skeet ranges. The rendezvous will turn back the clock to when muzzle-loading flintlock and percussion cap firearms were carried by trappers, hunters and traders. Experts will demonstrate historical arms throughout the day.
Lake City Range will also be open for other target shooters during the rendezvous. Normal fees will apply for those not in the black powder competition.
Rendezvous visitors will also have a chance to shoot air rifles and target archery, Zurowski said. Visitors can try throwing the atlatl, a long dart used by prehistoric hunters. Staff and volunteers will help new shooters and atlatl hurlers. The public will also have a chance to throw knives and tomahawks at targets.
