COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites new youth deer hunters to apply for a free mentored deer hunt on Nov. 2-3 in Boone County.
Participants will learn about deer biology and habitat, hunting safety, use of camouflage, ammunition and firearm selection, how to improve hunting and shooting skills, as well as regulations, and methods.
Each youth participant must be accompanied at the hunt by a parent or adult guardian who will hunt together with an experienced hunting mentor provided by MDC. MDC will provide firearms and ammunition, but participants are welcome to bring their own cased and unloaded firearms if they wish.
“Missouri has a proud history of quality deer hunting,” said MDC Conservation Educator Emily Porter. “We are excited to offer this opportunity to kids and their families who might not otherwise have the opportunity to deer hunt. By mentoring each youth and their parent or guardian, both will learn the skills it takes to become a safe and successful deer hunter. Experiences like this can create lasting traditions for years to come.”
Youth who have not completed their hunter education certification are still eligible for this hunt. First-time hunters may purchase an apprentice hunter permit. Participation in the hunt is limited to youths age 11-15 years old at the time of the hunt, who have never Telechecked a deer.
Space is limited for this mentored hunting opportunity. To attend, participants must apply no later than Oct. 1 by downloading the form at short.mdc.mo.gov/ZMY, completing the form, and returning it to Porter at Emily.Porter@mdc.mo.gov.
