JOPLIN, Mo. – Mushroom hunting is a tradition for many of Missouri’s outdoor enthusiasts.

Morels are the primary target of mushroom hunters at this time of year, but other edible mushrooms ripen and can be gathered for the dinner table in late spring, summer, and fall. One of the keys to enjoying Missouri’s wild mushrooms is knowing which ones are edible and which ones aren’t.

People can get helpful tips on mushroom identification April 20 at the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) program “Mushroom ID For Beginners.” This free program will be from 1-4 p.m. at MDC’s Walter Woods Conservation Area in Newton County. Dan Liles, the President of the Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Mycological Society, will provide helpful tips on how to locate and identify mushrooms during the indoors portion of the program. Then participants will be allowed to test their ’shroom-finding skills outdoors at the Walter Woods Area. People can register for this event at:

To get to Walter Woods Conservation Area, take Newton County Highway NN south from Redings Mill for 1.25 miles, then turn west on Dutch Elm Drive, which leads to the area. People can learn about other events organized by MDC’s Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center by calling 417-629-3434.
