SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Hikes provide great opportunities to have up-close experiences with the outdoor world and get good exercise and fresh air.

People can get tips on how to get enjoyment and nature knowledge from their next hike at two free Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) programs in March at MDC's Springfield Conservation Nature Center.

On Tuesday, March 12, people can learn more about the nature center’s trails at the “Nature Center Hike” program. The program is from 1-3:30 p.m. and is for ages 10-adult. At this program, participants will be led on a guided hike of the nature center’s trails by an MDC naturalist who will point out key features of the trails, discuss animals and plants commonly seen alongside the trails and discuss the overall beauty of the area. The hike is two miles and participants should dress for the weather and wear comfortable hiking shoes.

On Saturday, March 16, individuals ages 18 and older will be led on a hike along the Branson Creek Trails by Springfield Conservation Nature Center Volunteer Naturalist Pat Stritzel. The program will be 8:15 a.m.-4 p.m. Participants will meet at the nature center and carpool. They should bring a sack lunch, water, and wear comfortable hiking shoes. The hike will be five miles in length and of moderate difficulty.

People can register for either of these programs at mdc.mo.gov/SouthwestEvents or call 417-888-4237 for more information. The Springfield Conservation Nature Center is located at 4601 S. Nature Center Way in southeast Springfield.
