JOPLIN, Mo. – Trees are planted for many reasons, including aesthetics, wildlife habitat, shade, energy conservation, erosion reduction, and in remembrance of an event or person. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds landowners that when adding trees to your property, planning should come before planting. Before selecting and planting a tree, there are several questions that need to be asked in regards to evaluating the planting site. This is a decision that lasts a lifetime – and, in some cases, even longer. Without planning, a tree that is not suited for its planting location could develop problems in the future.

To help people learn how to plant the right trees in the right place, MDC will hold three free tree selection and planting workshops in southwest Missouri in March. Workshops are scheduled for:

  • March 5, 6:30 p.m., Mount Vernon Arts and Recreation Center (MARC), 822 W. Mount Vernon Blvd., Mount Vernon. Attendees are asked to enter through the south door under the stairs.
  • March 6, 6:30 p.m., Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center, 201 Riviera Drive (Wildcat Park), Joplin
  • March 8, 6:30 p.m., Thiebaud Auditorium, 105 E. 11th St., Lamar; Attendees should enter classroom through the east alley door. Registration is requested, but not required. To register or to get more information, contact MDC Community Forester Jon Skinner at 417-629-3423 or Jon.Skinner@mdc.mo.gov
