JOPLIN, Mo. – Winter is the prime time to prune trees. Harmful fungus, bacteria and insect pests are less likely to infect a pruning wound during a tree’s winter dormancy stage. That means now is a good time for homeowners and landowners to get helpful advice on tree work they will be doing in the months ahead.
Area homeowners can get information at free tree pruning workshops in November in southwest Missouri that are being put on by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Here is a list of these upcoming events:
Nov. 5: 6:30 p.m., Walter Woods Conservation Area, 7129 Dutch Elm Drive, Joplin
Nov. 8: 6:30 p.m., Thiebaud Auditorium, 105 E. 11th St., Lamar
Nov. 17: 6:30 p.m., Cunningham Park, Joplin, workshop will be held at the shelter near the main parking lot off Maiden Lane. This workshop is hosted by the Missouri Community Forestry Council and will offer hands-on pruning opportunities. This will allow individuals to practice their new skills and also provide a much-appreciated service of tree-pruning at the park..
Nov. 29: 6:30 p.m., The MARC (Mount Vernon Arts and Recreational Center) building, 822 Mount Vernon Blvd, Mount Vernon, enter through the south door under the stairs
Registration is requested, but not required for all these workshops.
