GRAY SUMMIT, Mo.—Archery is an activity that can help build confidence, coordination, and concentration. It’s a rewarding pursuit all by itself, or a skill that a person can leverage for hunting deer or turkey for example.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding a Basic Archery for Youth and Adults class Thursday, Sept. 23 at Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray Summit in Franklin County. The program is free and open to ages 10 and up.
“If you have an interest in learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, but don’t know where to begin --- or maybe you’ve shot a bow once, but never pursued the activity any further --- this may be the class you’re looking for,” said MDC Conservation Educator Conrad Mallady.
The class will teach the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This course is tailored for both youth and adults. It’s designed for those with an interest in shooting a bow and arrow but have little or no experience. Attendees will learn archery shooting fundamentals while gaining knowledge about equipment options and choices. All equipment will be provided by MDC. The class is not recommended if those with shoulder or back injuries.
The program will be held in the Shaw Nature Reserve’s Adlyne Freund Center parking lot at 300 Freund Lane.
Basic Archery for Youth and Adults is a free program, but advanced online registration is required at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZCv. Detailed directions to the program location will be emailed to participants prior to the program date. Please provide a good phone contact in case of cancellation.
As this is an in-person activity, MDC asks all participants to observe current local social distancing and masking guidelines. Bringing and wearing face coverings is encouraged when appropriate.
Program registrants should note that families now have the option to link their children’s accounts to their own which will streamline the program registration process. Once a group account is set up, parents will be able to register their children to an event without having to logoff and login for each person. This allows parents to register an entire family or select family members to an event at the same time.
