KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a FREE workshop on waterfowl hunting and duck decoy carving in Kirksville Nov. 5-6. Participants will learn about duck identification, ecology, and decoy history as they sculpt and paint their own decoy for use in waterfowl hunting or as unique art.
Duck decoys date back hundreds of years to when American Indians made and used them to lure birds into hunting grounds. As waterfowl hunting grew in popularity among early American settlers and hunters, these decoys evolved into more artistic and realistic forms, made from a variety of materials. Today decoy construction has become a popular and competitive craft.
This MDC decoy carving workshop will take place 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, and Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the MDC Northeast Regional Office at 3500 S. Baltimore St. in Kirksville.
The workshop is free and open to anyone at least 12-years old. Participants younger than 17-years old must be accompanied by an adult. Space in the workshop is limited and participants must preregister by Nov. 1 at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/160668. Participants should plan to wear clothes they don’t mind getting dirty or getting paint on.
