St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free orienteering course in two sessions in St. Joseph. The first session will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Dec. 11, and the second session will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15. This course will help those who want to use map and compass to find outdoor destinations in the wild or regain bearings while hiking.

The course is an introduction to the use of a compass. Many experienced outdoor enthusiasts have found themselves in unfamiliar surroundings and wondering which direction to walk. A cloudy day especially can remove the directional guide of the sun. A compass can help users regain their bearings. They can also help guide users to chosen destinations.

The classes will include classroom instruction and time outdoors using a compass. This class is for participants ages 11 and older. It will be held at MDC’s Northwest Regional Office on the campus of Missouri Western State University. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed.

Registration is required. To register for the Dec. 11 session, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZtE. To register for the Dec. 15 session, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zta.
