COLUMBIA, Mo.— The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer its Discover Nature – Girls Camp Aug. 7-9 at High Hill Christian Camp near High Hill. This free camp will introduce girls, ages 11-15, to a variety of outdoors skills in a supportive learning environment.

Campers will spend three fun-filled days learning hands-on outdoor skills, led by conservation professionals. Some of the planned activities include hunter education, firearms safety, archery and target shooting, water safety, and fishing. Campers will learn about all aspects of fishing from fish identification, casting, tying knots, and cleaning fish, to actually going fishing.

“One of the goals of camp is to encourage the participants to leave with the confidence to explore Missouri’s diverse outdoors on their own,” said Conservation Agent Adam Doerhoff.

All activities occur in a group setting of peers, and a comfortable, encouraging environment.  Discover Nature – Girls Camp is led by conservation agents and other MDC employees who are experienced in working with children, trained in First Aid/CPR and have undergone appropriate background checks.  Camp chaperones will all be females who have filled out an application and background form.

The camp is free but limited to limited to 60 girls. The first 60 girls to apply will receive invitations to attend.  All subsequent applications will be placed on a waiting list.  Applications must be received by June 18.

Discover Nature – Girls Camp serves part of the Department’s mission to help people get outside and discover nature.
