Kansas City, Mo. – You’ve found the time to go fishing and made the journey to the river or lake. Anticipation is high as you make the first cast. But then _ zing crunch _ something is wrong with the fishing line or the reel. Avoid needless frustration by cleaning, oiling, and repairing fishing reels during the cold days of winter. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free class on reel maintenance and repair from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs.

Keeping a reel in tip top shape can make fishing more successful and fun, said John Rittel, course instructor and MDC community education assistant. The class will teach how to maintain and make minor but common repairs to spinning, spin-casting, and bait casting fishing reels.

“During this program we’ll learn how to disassemble, clean, lubricate, and make some repairs on these three common types of fishing reels,” Rittel said.

This class is open to participants ages 11 and older. Registration is required. Youths must be accompanied by a registered adult. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4ks.
