Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free prescribed burn workshop tailored for private landowners from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, in the Conservation Room at the Bass Pro Shop in Independence.

Fire can be used through a prescribed burn to limit unwanted vegetation and encourage native plants that are beneficial to wildlife. Fire is also a tool for boosting forage in pastures used for hay or grazing. MDC staff will discuss topics such as: developing a burn plan, neighborhood fire cooperatives, what equipment is needed, and techniques for achieving habitat goals. Safety issues are critically important and will be covered – including fuels, humidity, wind, and temperature.

Participants are asked to register by March 22 on the MDC online events pages, https://mdc.mo.gov/events-s3. Registration is also available by phone, 816-622-0900.

For more information, contact MDC Private Land Conservationists, Andy Carmack at 816-622-0900, or Randy Keeran at 816-531-2101, ext. 108.

MDC offers several types of assistance with fish, wildlife, native plants, and timber management on private lands. For more information, visit https://mdc.mo.gov/property.
