Warsaw, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free class in making pressed wildflowers for crafts from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery in Warsaw. This class will be held indoors at the hatchery visitor center, 28232 Hatchery Ave.

“Pressed flower crafts are a great way to preserve the beauty of nature to be enjoyed anytime,” said Kara Entrop, MDC community education assistant. “Pressed flowers are great for making cards, gifts, wall art, and decorations. The possibilities are endless.”

Crafters press and preserve flowers in various ways. A common way is placing the flower between paper to pull moisture out, and flattening them using a wooden press, putting weight on the paper, or putting the flower between pages of a book and closing it. Wildflowers have a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes to work with.

Summer is a good time to gather and press wildflowers because various species are abundant, Entrop said. MDC will provide all the supplies necessary for the class. Participants will learn basic flower-pressing methods and the best techniques for crafting with them. Then they will make their own notecard, bookmark, and ornament.

This program is for participants ages 8 and older. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZVN. For more information or help with registration, contact Entrop at 660-438-4465.
