SPOKANE, Mo. – Teachers interested in becoming archery instructors at their schools and teachers interested in taking their school's archery program to the next level will have opportunities to receive training in July in Spokane.
On July 15, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold a Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) basic archery instructor training class from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spokane Middle School, 1130 Spokane Road. Register for this clinic online at naspbai.org.
This free training class is meant for teachers interested in incorporating MoNASP instruction into their school's curriculum. Teachers must attend the training to receive instructor certification.
Basic archery instructor training is required for schools to participate in the MoNASP and to qualify for related grant money. MoNASP programs must be a part of a school's curriculum for at least two weeks to qualify that school for regional, state, national and international NASP competitions.
The next day, July 16, MDC will offer a MoNASP Qualifying Events 101 archery clinic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spokane Middle School. This clinic will focus on advanced coaching skills, how to prepare a school archery team for competition, and how to host a qualifying event.
Participants must be certified teaching staff and either actively teaching MoNASP or planning to start a program in 2015. Participants must also be certified as a Basic Archery Instructor. Participants in either clinic should bring a sack lunch, snacks and their own refreshments.
MoNASP is the Missouri branch of NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program), a national program that uses archery to boost students' physical dexterity and self-confidence. Participants also learn an activity they can enjoy for the rest of their lives in the form of recreational target shooting or bow hunting.
More than 135,000 students participate in the MoNASP program and Norwood Elementary in Wright County recently became the 500th in the state to join the program. Information about MoNASP events can be found at mdc.mo.gov/education.
