ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Growing native gardens is becoming more popular every season, and for good reason. Missouri native plants benefit our environment, provide food and habitat for desirable wildlife, and are easier and less expensive to maintain than exotics.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to give native gardeners a head start by offering two native plant workshops for homeowners this Saturday, March 16. Both workshops are identical and will be offered to give more people the opportunity to attend. The locations and times are:
Naturally resilient Missouri native plants are great for home landscaping. They solve common gardening problems and attract a variety of wildlife. Participants will learn what natives might work best in their gardens.
The workshops will look at seven different landscape plans, including ones designed to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and add water features. They will also cover where to buy native plants and introduce participants to Missouri’s GrowNative website.
Each workshop is designed to help even those without green thumbs get a start with native plants. For an additional spring planting kickstart, participants can choose from free yellow coneflower, prairie blazing star, butterfly milkweed, or lanceleaf coreopsis seedlings to take home.
Both workshops are free, but space is limited, and advanced online registration is required at the links listed above.
Rockwoods Reservation is located at 2751 Glencoe Road, off Highway 109 between I-44 and Highway 100. The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is located at 2360 Highway D, about two miles west of Highway 94.
