St. CHARLES, Mo.—Technology and nature can work together. There’s no need to give up one for the other. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is presenting a free program that will show you how to combine both. Nature 2.0 will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the August A. Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles.
If you love the latest technology and getting outdoors, Nature 2.0 will enable you to use your smartphone and the free iNaturalist App to discover what types of plants and animals live in your backyard and local conservation areas.
iNaturalist is an online database and network of casual and professional observers who help document plants and animals worldwide. The app uses new photo recognition software to help identify or narrow down what species of plant or animal you’re seeing.
In this program, participants will do a brief classroom session to go over the features of the iNaturalist app and how to use it. The next stop is outside to explore a .7-mile paved trail and use the app to make observations of what we find. Participants should plan to dress accordingly as most of the program will be held outdoors.
Participants should also have a wireless device with a camera, cellular data service, and download the free iNaturalist app onto their device, and create their free iNaturalist account before coming to the program. The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is located at 2360 Highway D in St. Charles, about two miles west of Highway 94.
