OWENSVILLE, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites landowners and anyone interested in learning about prescribed burning to a free workshop from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Jan. 24, at the Owensville Regional Library, located at 503 Olive St.

Participants will learn about prescribed burning as a method of boosting wildlife habitat and removing less desirable plant species. MDC staff will discuss equipment, methods, and techniques for implementing controlled burns, safety considerations, and proper weather conditions. The workshop will also cover how to create a burn plan and time the burn according to specific management objectives and landscape attributes.

If weather conditions allow, a demonstration burn will follow the classroom session at a nearby conservation area.

“This workshop allows individuals to understand how and why we utilize prescribed fire,” said MDC Private Land Conservationist Seth Barrioz.  “Prescribed fire is one of the most beneficial tools that landowners can utilize when managing their properties for wildlife across the state. Individuals will be able to listen and ask questions about how to conduct prescribed burns and participate in a live prescribed burn with professional staff, further benefiting their understanding of this important management practice.”

Attendees should bring field clothing (cotton or wool; no synthetics), leather boots and gloves to wear for the demonstration burn. The workshop is free to attend, but participants must pre-register by Jan. 20. For more information or to register, call MDC Private Land Conservationist Seth Barrioz at (573) 417-3037.
