BLAND, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a workshop on the basics of timber harvesting in Gasconade County on Oct. 26. This training will help landowners learn how to begin the process of a structured timber harvest on their farm. Participants will learn about the benefits of managing forest, beyond monetary value.

Benefits of active woodland management include improving forest health, recruiting the next generation of tree seedlings, and supporting diverse wildlife species. This workshop will guide attendees through an active timber harvest in Gasconade County to provide a better understanding of the harvesting process. Weather permitting, the course will include a demonstration of a 37-horsepower TimberKing portable sawmill during a light lunch following the tour.

“Timber harvesting is the last step of a silvicultural system which sustains healthy and vigorously growing trees to a point where the landowner harvests logs for various forest products,” said MDC Forester Aaron Holsapple. “Depending on the acreage you own, harvesting allows you to keep various successional stages operating at the same time, which is needed by numerous wildlife species. For instance, many songbirds require young stands of small trees for nesting, while larger upland game species such as deer and turkey benefit from both immature and mature stands of timber.”

This workshop will take place 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Canaan Conservation Area, north of Bland. MDC offers this workshop at no cost to participants, but space is limited and registration is required by visiting mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/170242.

For more information about this workshop, contact Holsapple at (573) 897-3797, ext. 117, or Aaron.Holsapple@mdc.mo.gov. To find more landowner workshops offered by MDC, visit mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/AllEvents?EventTypeId=16.
