MINDENMINES, Mo. – Besides being an enjoyable outdoor pastime, dove hunting can be an educational tool, too. The wing-shooting techniques and firearms safety practices needed to be a successful dove hunter can serve as an introduction to other hunting or sportshooting activities.
Young hunters can learn about dove hunting at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Youth Dove Hunting Workshop, a two-day event to be held at MDC's Shawnee Trail Conservation Area in Barton County. From 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 29, young hunters will be introduced to the sport of dove hunting and the ethics and firearms safety skills that go with it at a pre-hunt workshop at the Shawnee Trail Area shop. This will be followed by an adult-mentored hunt on Sept. 5 at Shawnee Trail.
This event is open to youths age 11-15. All youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult (one adult per youth) for all portions of the clinic and hunt. Youths must attend the Aug. 29 clinic to participate in the Sept. 5 hunt. All youth hunters must be hunter education certified and have a migratory bird hunting license.
This event is free to participants and is an example of how MDC helps people discover nature. Advance registration is required. Please call MDC's Joplin Office at 417-629-3423 to register.
