Parkville, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) on Nov. 25 presented a $450,000 check to Platte County officials to assist with the costs for a new boat launching ramp and parking lot at Parkville's Platte Landing Park. MDC provided the money under its Community Assistance Program to build the ramp's entrance road, parking lot and restrooms.

The project is a partnership between MDC, Platte County parks, Parkville and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Boaters, anglers and public safety authorities had no reliable place to launch boats in the Missouri River on the Missouri side immediately upstream of Kansas City prior to the ramp construction. Officials opened and dedicated the ramp, parking lot and a nearby dog park in June. MDC's contribution is made possible by the people of Missouri and funding provided through the Federal Aid to Sport Fish Restoration Program.

"It has been a pleasure working with Platte County on the project," said Marlyn Miller, MDC fisheries program supervisor. "Everyone was enthusiastic and professional from beginning to end."

City officials and MDC staff have spent years looking for a suitable site and bringing funding together for the boat ramp to improve river access for recreation and public safety.

"The Missouri Conservation Commission and the Department of Conservation leaders are very supportive of cooperative projects like this," Miller said.

Neal Davidson, a Platte County Parks & Recreation Board member, accepted the check for the county.

"We thank all the folks with the Conservation Department and it's been a real honor," Davidson said.

Platte Landing Park is accessed off of Main Street in Parkville and is just upstream from the city's English Landing Park. Bordering the Missouri River, the parks and riverfront trails are a popular destination for residents and visitors in the Kansas City region.

"This is a tremendous addition to the city," said Parkville Mayor Nan Johnston. "It's a good boat landing and a tremendous park. We're thrilled."
