JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a presentation on the history of turkey calls in Missouri, April 4, at Runge Conservation Nature Center, 330 Commerce Drive in Jefferson City.
Whether collecting them or using them on a hunt, turkey calls are both utilitarian and artful. MDC Regional Outreach & Education Supervisor Brian Flowers will share an exciting look at the history of Missouri turkey calls and the artists behind them. Participants will examine the calls and learn more about hunters and pioneers who’ve made Missouri turkey calls some of the most sought after works of art in the nation.
“Turkey hunting roots run deep in Missouri, and the state’s call-makers share a special place with most collectors,” said Flowers. “The turkey call is both a utilitarian object, used as part of the hunt, but also a form of artwork with elaborate function and design.”
The Missouri Turkey Calls and the Artists Behind Them program will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. All ages are welcome at this free presentation, which will include a lecture and demonstrations of a wide variety of Missouri turkey calls.
