JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free program on the history and legend of the longrifle at Runge Nature Center on April 25.

The longrifle is a truly American invention, and in the forests and prairies of the expanding frontier, it made its mark. Whether carried by Daniel Boone into the wilds of Kentucky, Lewis & Clark on the Corps of Discovery expedition, or with William Becknell down the Santa Fe trail, these rifles shaped our country.

“No other single object in the American experience has as much history, legend, or lore associated with it,” said MDC Outreach & Education Regional Supervisor Brian Flowers.

Smoke & Fire: History and Legend of the Longrifle on the American Frontier, 1754-1850 will explore the origins and evolution of the longrifle in early America, and culminate with discussion about how to use these firearms in modern-day hunting. The program will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on April 25 at Runge Nature Center, 330 Commerce Drive in Jefferson City.

This program is free and open to all ages, but space is limited and preregistration is required by April 24 at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/166324.
